IntroductionNatural and traditional health therapies in Australia today are in increasing demand as more and more Australians find that these therapies offer viable effective health options.Natural and traditional therapists are trained in the treatment and prevention of most health care problems, using principles and practices that have been applied for thousands of years in promotion and maintenance of optimum health. The diagnosis and assessment of illness by natural and traditional therapists relates to the whole person rather than to particular symptoms and treatment is aimed at balancing energy throughout the body and its organs. Typically, natural and traditional remedies are derived from natural sources and retain a natural integrity which is usually missing from orthodox pharmaceutical remedies. Natural and traditional therapies represent excellent value to public health in Australia from both the quality and effectiveness of remedies and treatments they provide and the fact they do no rely on Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and other taxpayer-funded subsidies.
